President Donald Trump addressed one of the most talked-about incidents of his second term following a dramatic Saturday evening at the Washington Hilton. The president broke his silence on the latest brush with violence, offering a striking perspective on why such moments keep finding him.
Donald Trump says shooting incident is reflection of his impact
The Washington Post reported on Saturday that President Donald Trump views his repeated brushes with violence as a sign of his historic significance. Trump said he refuses to let the dangers affect him. His remarks followed a shooting at the Washington Hilton during the White House correspondents’ dinner.
Trump and multiple Cabinet officials attended the dinner Saturday evening when the incident occurred. Authorities have not identified a motive or target. Interim D.C. police chief Jeffery Carroll said the suspect ran through a security checkpoint toward the ballroom. Trump occupied the head table inside that ballroom.
The latest incident follows two assassination attempts during the 2024 campaign. “I’ve studied assassinations, and I must tell you, the most impactful people, the people that do the most … they’re the ones that they go after,” Trump told reporters at the White House. He spoke soon after authorities apprehended the shooting suspect.
“And I hate to say I’m honored by that, but I’ve done a lot,” the president added. Trump mentioned Abraham Lincoln but skipped Ronald Reagan, who suffered injuries in a shooting outside the same hotel in 1981. A would-be assassin wounded Trump’s ear during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania in July 2024.
In September 2024, a man set up a sniper’s nest outside Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida. Secret Service agents spotted the gunman, and a judge sentenced him to life in prison in February. “It’s a dangerous profession, but I don’t view it that way,” Trump said.
Trump pushed to reschedule the dinner within 30 days after law enforcement cleared the venue. “We very much wanted to continue it, because I don’t like to let these sick people, these thugs, these horrible, horrible people change the fabric of our life,” Trump said.
