George Clooney commented on the recent WHCD shooting and the Trump administration. The actor called for the “perfect union” in a recent speech. Clooney took a little detour from the usual acceptance speeches and instead addressed the current politically charged environment (via Variety).

The Jay Kelly star said, “I can’t be here on a night like tonight and just ignore everything that’s going on in the world. I disagree with everything that this administration stands for, but there’s no place for the kind of violence we saw two nights ago in Washington, D.C. Nor is there a room for this kind of violence in Minnesota with Alex Pretti or Renée Good.”

He continued, “It seems to me there’s a struggle that has to be won against hatred and corruption and cruelty and violence. It’s a struggle for the very soul of this republic, because to foment hate and violence is to inherit the wind.”

The Up in the Air star, while critical of the current administration, strongly advocated for peace and harmony. Clooney stated, “The question is simply, what are we, as citizens of this great country, to do? And it is that answer in all of us, left, right and center, can build a more perfect union, heal our wounds and begin to truly make America great again.”

Previously, Clooney defended Jimmy Kimmel against President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump’s criticism of the comedian. Clooney revealed to Variety, “Jimmy’s a comedian, and I would argue that Karoline Leavitt didn’t mean shots should be fired. She was making a joke. Fair enough. You look at that side and go, ‘Well, jokes are jokes.’ But the rhetoric is a little dangerous. And we’ve seen it a lot lately.”
