Former FBI Director James Comey Surrenders After Being Charged With Threatening Donald Trump’s Life

A former FBI Director is in trouble for a controversial photo posted on social media. James Comey surrendered to authorities in Virginia as he faces his second Justice Department indictment in six months. In May 2025, he posted an Instagram photo with seashells spelling out 8647.

The Justice Department has deemed that as a death threat against Donald Trump. James was briefly placed under arrest for a hearing on Wednesday, which lasted about 10 minutes. He declined to comment outside a courthouse in Alexandria, Virginia today but previously had something to say online.

James’s past actions may be coming back to bite him, but he isn’t afraid to fight back. In a video posted to Substack, the former FBI Director said, despite the allegations against him, “I’m still innocent. I’m still not afraid.” He went on to add, “I still believe in the independent federal judiciary, so let’s go.” The former Deputy Attorney General served as the seventh Director of the FBI from 2013 until his termination in 2017.

As for the numbers spelled out in his post, some interpreted it as a cryptic message to the POTUS. The number 47 likely signifies Donald Trump as the 47th President. Meanwhile, the term 86 has been commonly used in the hospitality industry to indicate that an item is sold out, or that a drunk person is refused service. The President’s cognitive state has been frequently criticized during his second term.

The May 2025 Instagram photo by James was deleted by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the FBI, who accused him of indirectly calling for Trump’s assassination. James has adamantly denied that the picture has any political connotations.

Current FBI Director Kash Patel and Attorney General Todd Blanche say they didn’t believe the Instagram post was harmless. James has been indicted on two criminal counts. The charges carry a maximum prison sentence of 10 years. James drew backlash from the government for investigating alleged Russian meddling in Trump’s 2016 election victory.
