Judge Apologizes To Man Accused in Donald Trump Assassination Attempt

It’s the last thing anyone might have expected a suspected shooter might get. Cole Thomas Allen is on trial for allegedly trying to assassinate Donald Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner last month. The 31-year-old was detained after shots rang out during the gala.

He’s been placed on suicide watch and locked down 24/7 while being cut off from so many things. Phone calls and visits, aside from his lawyers, are allegedly prohibited for him, while he can’t even have a bible according to reports. A judge addressed these supposed conditions he’s been living under in court.

The President may not like it, but Cole is getting empathy from the Judge in his trial. In a surprising twist, Zia Faruqui told the suspect in court, “I’m sorry that things have not been the way they are supposed to,” according to Fox News. He made it clear that this will not stand, ordering jail officials to update him on Cole’s living situation behind bars. He is pushing them to move Cole into a less restrictive unit with windows, proper legal access and basic accommodations.

Cole’s hearing apparently got very heated even after his attorney backed off on a motion challenging his confinement. Zia said that he has concerns about how his imprisonment went down. The Judge added that the system is supposed to ensure fairness rather than pile on more punishment.

Recently, Trump was asked by a reporter if he still felt safe in the weeks since the shooting. Trump said it’s not something that’s on his mind anymore. According to court filings, this attack was premeditated, with Cole reportedly armed in his hotel room at least a half hour before the shooting.

The charges against Cole include attempting to assassinate Trump and two other firearm-related allegations. For the time being, Cole remains behind bars, though his living conditions are likely to be closely monitored. His next court appearance will be on May 11.
