Katy Perry became the subject of a viral fire claim after a Met Gala clip spread online. The “Firework” singer safely attended the 2026 event in New York in a white look. The confusion began after an X post claimed she “sets herself on fire” for the fashion night. However, a later debunk said the footage came from a controlled stunt, not the red carpet. That gap made the correction central to the story.
Video allegedly claiming Katy Perry set herself on fire at Met Gala is false
A 17-second clip was posted by Pop Drug, captioned, “Katy Perry sets herself on fire for the #MetGala.” The video showed a camera operator filming a person covered in flames on an indoor set. The post had around 6 million views, 9.2K likes, and over 1.1K replies.
However, a follow-up reply asked Grok, “is Katy Perry fine or burned?” and the AI assistant responded, “She’s fine. That’s not Katy Perry.” It identified the clip as old behind-the-scenes footage from “Vuelve a Mi,” adding, “No fire, no burns. Classic viral mix-up!”
For context, “Vuelve a mí” was a Telemundo telenovela starring William Levy and Samadhi Zendejas. The viral fire clip appeared tied to Liana Corrales, played by Kimberly Dos Ramos, in a finale storyline where Liana caused a fire while targeting Nuria.
In fact, the Met Gala claim was also proven false because Perry appeared at the May 4 event without injury. She attended the Metropolitan Museum of Art in an outfit that included a Stella McCartney white gown and a Miodrag Guberinic metal-and-mesh headpiece.
Additionally, People noted that the 41-year-old’s look featured a symbolic white glove with a sixth finger. The detail referenced AI-generated fake Met Gala images previously linked to Perry.
The 2026 Met Gala appearance also marked Perry’s first in-person return to the event since 2022. Her structured white gown had sheer side panels. It also had brown-edged cutouts that looked like singed fabric.
Meanwhile, the viral video kept spreading because the fire stunt matched Perry’s dramatic public image. Still, the available context showed no Met Gala accident. The clip was recycled behind-the-scenes footage, while Katy Perry’s real red-carpet moment focused on fashion and masks.
