Jerry Seinfeld reportedly poked fun at “Friends” in his latest stand-up performance. The comedian recently appeared at the Netflix Is a Joke festival held in Los Angeles. During the set, Seinfeld asked the crowd to name his all-time favorite television show. Subsequently, he made a hilarious comparison between his sitcom, “Seinfeld,” and “Friends.”
Jerry Seinfeld told a crowd that ‘Friends’ followed a similar format
Jerry Seinfeld joked about “Friends” being similar to “Seinfeld” at the Netflix Is a Joke festival. According to The Hollywood Reporter, when asked about his all-time favorite television show, the crowd mentioned his own sitcom, “Seinfeld.” However, the veteran actor responded, “Seinfeld? I am Seinfeld. Why would I watch Seinfeld?” He added, “Would you go up to your bathroom mirror and go, ‘This is fantastic. I love this show. I’m in every episode.”
Soon, someone from the audience said, “Friends”, which led to a hilarious response from the comedian. “Here’s my theory on Friends. My show came on — ’89, ’90. Friends came on a few years later,” he said. The 72-year-old continued, “I think NBC was watching my show and went, ‘Hey, this is working pretty well. Why don’t we try the same thing with good-looking people?” He concluded, “And that was a pretty good idea. I think that kind of worked.”
For the unversed, “Seinfeld” and “Friends” had similar plots focusing on the journey of a group of friends. The sitcoms that aired in the 90s on NBC went on to become cult classics, with fans often drawing comparisons.
This is not the first time Seinfeld has made fun of “Friends.” In a satirical Pop-Tarts video, a character told him, “Tell me, how does it feel when people steal your ideas and then do whatever they want with them?” The comedian answered, “You mean like Friends?”
Recently, the comedian and Seinfeld co-creator Larry David also recalled the making of the sitcom at “The Rushmore Podcast.” The event was also part of the Netflix Is a Joke festival. The duo met as stand-up comedians and discussed ideas, thinking, “If we put this in a show, it’d be hilarious.”
