Donald Trump reportedly fueling debate over his successor

According to a recent report by The New York Times, Donald Trump often asks his associates whether Vice President JD Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio would be better positioned to succeed him after his term ends in 2028. The president has posed this question on multiple occasions, including during dinners with friends or patio discussions at Mar-a-Lago.

This debate has been steadily gaining traction among Republicans. The question of which of the two prominent officials would be more likely to win over GOP voters remains. Vance and Rubio are both highly influential figures within the party, boasting years of political experience.

According to Trump’s advisors, the president is polling his associates to see which of the two officials, whom he refers to as “kids,” will take the reins in 2028. However, the president is reportedly not too preoccupied with the end of his term.

Vice President Vance has recently led peace talks with Iran amid the ongoing conflict. However, it remains at a stalemate. He has also attempted to build support for former Hungarian leader Viktor Orbán, amid his failed re-election bid.

Furthermore, Vance appeared at rallies throughout the Midwest. There, his upbringing in a working-class Appalachian family has helped him build rapport with voters ahead of the midterm elections.

Most recently, Rubio visited Pope Leo XIV in Italy to ease tensions between the two nations. The US Secretary of State also met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. He will reportedly accompany President Trump on his upcoming visit to China.

Amid the debate, Rubio, who is close friends with Vance, had previously stated that he would not run for president if the VP chose to do so as well. Speaking with Vanity Fair last year, Rubio declared, “If JD Vance runs for president, he’s going to be our nominee, and I’ll be one of the first people to support him.”
