Christopher Nolan Defends The Odyssey Travis Scott Casting Choice

Travis Scott‘s casting in Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey sparked significant backlash, with fans expressing skepticism about how the famous rapper would fit within the film. However, despite considerable displeasure, the director has defended the choice, in addition to offering a brief explanation about the same.

Christopher Nolan defends casting Travis Scott in The Odyssey

Christopher Nolan recently defended his decision to cast rapper Travis Scott as a bard in The Odyssey. He said that it stemmed from the acknowledgement of the parallel between oral poetry and rap.

In an in-depth interaction with Time to promote the film, the Oppenheimer filmmaker said, “I cast him because I wanted to nod towards the idea that this story has been handed down as oral poetry, which is analogous to rap.”

Scott’s role hasn’t been officially confirmed as of writing. However, rumors suggest the “Yosemite” artist is essaying Demodocus. In the Greek epic, he is a poet who frequently visits the Phaeacian King Alcinous’ court and sings narrative songs. Notably, during Odysseus’ stay in Scherie, Demodocus sings two songs about the Trojan war — one about the dispute between Odysseus and Achilles and another about the Trojan horse and sacking of Troy, which moves the Ithacan monarch to tears.

The Odyssey marks the second collaboration between Scott and Nolan. The pair previously worked together on the latter’s film, Tenet, released in 2020. Scott recorded the song, “The Plan,” co-written by the movie’s composer, Ludwig Göransson.

The film premieres in theaters on July 17, 2026. Made on an estimated budget of $250 million, it is reportedly Nolan’s most expensive film to date. In addition to directing, Nolan wrote the screenplay. He also co-produced with his wife and producing partner, Emma Thomas, via their production banner, Syncopy. Universal Pictures also co-produced and will distribute it in cinemas.

Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, marking the actor’s third collaboration with Nolan following Interstellar and Oppenheimer. Other returning collaborators include Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Benny Safdie, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, and Bill Irwin.

Meanwhile, first-time collaborators include Tom Holland, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Mia Goth, and John Leguizamo.
