The Beatles’ Star Slams Donald Trump’s America: ‘At Each Other’s Throats’

The Beatles’ star Paul McCartney took a jab at America under the rule of Donald Trump, Republicans, and Democrats. He claimed that even though they are always at odds, their group’s song has the power to unify them and make them sing together. He believes that when the song plays, they forget to argue and simply live in the moment, which he thinks is valuable.

In a conversation on The Rest Is Entertainment podcast, McCartney reflected on the power of their music, which could still bring people together, no matter their differences. Providing an example of one of the Beatles’ songs that wields such ability to unify, he added, “Particularly these days, too, you do something like ‘Hey Jude’ and you see this whole audience singing together.”

He further shares how this particular song makes people put aside their grudges and just come together and vibe. “I mean, in Trump’s America, and the Republicans and Democrats all at each other’s throats—when we do that song, they’re not. They’re all loving it, and it’s like, wow, this is pretty amazing,” he said.

He explained that when this song plays, it appears that the room forgets their arguments and they sing together; such moments he deems as most valuable in such times. In the past, McCartney, however, has openly criticized Trump for bringing up the bad side of America under his rule.

He said in an interview with the Daily Telegraph, “He’s unleashed the ugly side of America. People feel like they have got a free pass to be, if not violent, at least antagonistic towards people of a different colour or a different race. I think we all thought we’d got past that a long time ago” (via RTE). Moreover, he once also referred to Trump as “mad captain” in reference to his handling of the crowds as he spoke about climate change.
