Harrison Ford’s Star Wars Casting Audition Began as a Simple Favor

Harrison Ford’s Han Solo resonated with Star Wars fans as a grounded, cynical, sarcastic, and reluctantly heroic smuggler-turned-Rebel Alliance hero. However, Ford’s path to the role didn’t start with a spotlight or a casting call. Interestingly, his audition began as nothing more than a simple favor.

Harrison Ford shares details of his accidental Star Wars audition

Harrison Ford recently recounted his accidental audition for Han Solo, opening up about the twist of fate that landed him in Star Wars. On the May 13 episode of the Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast, hosted by Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson, Ford spoke candidly about his career.

The 83-year-old told the hosts that early in his career, while struggling as an actor, he also “had a career in carpentry.” That job eventually led him to Han Solo in Star Wars, the breakthrough role that launched him to global stardom.

“I was working at the time for this guy named Francis Ford Coppola,” he said.

Ford, however, explained that he wasn’t there to act in one of the director’s films. He was installing the entrance to his office.

While Ford worked, George Lucas was in the same building, casting Star Wars out of Francis Ford Coppola’s office. Lucas had told the agents that American Graffiti actors were off the table, since he was searching for new, unfamiliar faces.

For those unaware, Ford did play a supporting role in Lucas’ 1973 film American Graffiti.

Harrison Ford noted that George Lucas conducted his first interview with Richard Dreyfuss, who had starred in Jaws in 1975. When the casting director asked Ford to read with other actors, he agreed. Shortly after, he was offered the part.

“So, that’s how lucky I am. That’s the kind of luck I have.” Ford said. “But if I was really lucky, I’d be Chris Walken if I could,” he jokingly added.

When Woody Harrelson asked at what point Harrison Ford sensed they actually wanted him for the part, the Indiana Jones actor said that it hit him roughly two months after signing the contract.
