A majority of Americans now say their financial situation has deteriorated under President Donald Trump’s economic policies, a new poll indicates. The findings come as households continue to absorb the impact of rising fuel costs and broader inflation in the economy.
New poll shows what Americans think about economy under Donald Trump
The CBS News/YouGov poll found that 57% of American respondents believe Donald Trump’s policies are leaving them “financially worse off.” By comparison, 14% said the economic policies had made them “financially better off.” Meanwhile, 29% reported their circumstances in the economy had stayed about the same.
In addition, personal financial ratings have tumbled into negative territory for many households. The survey found that 44% of Americans now describe their own financial and economic situation as either “fairly bad” or “very bad.” In contrast, 49% rate their situation as “very good” or “fairly good,” and 7% remain unsure.
Much of the strain is flowing from the pump. The war with Iran has now dragged on for its fourth month. It has shut down the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway essential to the global oil trade. According to figures from AAA, the national average price for a regular gallon of petrol stood at $4.51 on Sunday, up from $3.9 a year ago.
House Speaker Mike Johnson addressed the strain directly on Sunday, linking domestic hardship to the disruption of the waterway. “Really, all points lead back to that,” he said. “Gas prices are too high because of that, and then that has an effect on how goods are transported to the grocery store and all the rest.” Johnson described the continuing difficulties as “economic trouble” tied “directly to the Strait of Hormuz.”
Furthermore, Republicans are trying to defend their slim House majority in the upcoming midterm elections, and the persistent squeeze on household budgets has become a central worry for voters. The new poll was conducted from May 13 to 15 among 2,064 adults. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.
