Fashion Flub Sparks Fiery Donald Trump Criticism of J.D. Vance

A festive pair of socks reportedly earned J.D. Vance an unexpected fashion critique from Donald Trump. The vice president recently revealed that the president called him out during a high-profile St. Patrick’s Day meeting after spotting shamrock-covered socks peeking out beneath his suit.

The moment happened while Vance and Trump were hosting Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin before heading to the Oval Office.

Speaking to a crowd in Kansas City on Monday, Vance recalled the exchange with a laugh. “I decided to wear my shamrock socks to welcome the Irish Prime Minister,” he said as per RadarOnline.com.

According to Vance, the room was packed with cameras and reporters as Trump began delivering remarks. Then the president suddenly noticed the socks. “We’re sitting down in front of God and everybody, and probably 100 TV cameras on a live press conference,” Vance explained. “The President starts his remarks, and then he looks over and says, ‘What is going on with those socks?’”

The vice president said the experience taught him a simple lesson: “Dress conservatively around the President of the United States.”

Anyone familiar with Trump’s long-documented interest in appearance probably wasn’t surprised by the story. The president has frequently commented on clothing choices, both inside and outside his administration.

Earlier this year, Trump confirmed reports that he had been gifting Florsheim dress shoes to Cabinet members, lawmakers, and White House aides. Speaking on The Brian Kilmeade Show, he explained that he preferred polished dress shoes over sneakers in official settings. “I don’t want my Cabinet members wearing sneakers,” Trump said at the time.

During a February 2025 Oval Office meeting, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s signature military-style attire became a topic of discussion. Trump initially joked about the outfit before later complimenting it.

The president has also shown a habit of teasing Vance in public. During a recent Police Week event, Trump joked that Secret Service agents whisked the vice president away during a security scare “like he was a little boy,” while he remained standing nearby.
