Ex-Prince Andrew Retains One Honor After Losing Many Others — Report

Prince Andrew may have lost several royal privileges and honors over the years, but one tribute tied to his name appears to be staying put. According to reports, residents in a Scottish neighborhood have pushed back against efforts to rename a street linked to the former royal, arguing that changing it would create more inconvenience than benefit.

Locals reportedly want street named after Ex-Prince Andrew to be kept the same

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew, has seen many public ties and recognitions disappear in recent years as institutions and organizations moved to distance themselves from controversy surrounding the royal. However, in Renfrewshire, Scotland, one connection remains: Andrew Avenue.

The street sits among a cluster of roads named after Queen Elizabeth II’s children, including Charles Avenue, Anne Avenue, and Edward Avenue. Last year, local authorities launched a consultation after concerns reportedly surfaced regarding the street’s association with the former Duke of York.

However, residents largely appeared unconvinced that a change was necessary. Out of 52 households, only 22 responded to the consultation, and the majority opposed renaming the street.

For many locals, the issue was less about royal associations and more about practicality. Residents reportedly raised concerns over changing documents, licenses, business information, and addresses. Several told BBC Scotland News they had never even connected the street’s name with Prince Andrew until the recent discussion emerged.

One resident, Yvonne Laidlaw, reportedly said Andrew Avenue had simply always been part of the neighborhood and never carried royal significance in daily life. Others echoed similar thoughts, saying they understood differing opinions but felt the disruption would outweigh any real purpose.

Some even suggested creative alternatives without altering the street name entirely. One resident reportedly joked that people could associate it with another Andrew altogether, floating ideas such as St. Andrew or even tennis icon Andy Murray.

Councillor John Shaw, who requested the consultation, said residents deserved an opportunity to voice their views, even if the outcome ultimately leaned toward keeping the street name unchanged.
