The Chicks’ Natalie Maines has called US President Donald Trump a “fugly slut.” Maines accused Trump of damaging democracy. She wrote on a post on Instagram, “Our democracy is disappearing right before our eyes. This fugly slut is using your gas money to pay the insurrectionists. But don’t worry about it. I’m sure posting selfies will fix everything.”
Natalie Maines doesn’t hold back and calls Donald Trump a “fugly slut”
The 51-year-old lead vocalist for the country band, who won around 13 Grammy Awards, shared a carousel of three images, including a close-up of Donald Trump and photos from the January 6 Capitol riot at the U.S. Capitol. She typed, “My last post that called him a fugly slut got removed. We’ll see how long this one lasts. Repost and help the message live. Named 1M times in the #epsteinfiles #democracy #freespeech #fuglyslut“
Though Trump has denied allegations and has not been charged with any crime linking him to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, his name has appeared several times in Epstein’s files.
However, Maines’ post quickly revived memories of 2003, when Maines criticised President George W. Bush during a London concert just before the Iraq War, which took place in March 2003. Maines told the attendees at that time, “Just so you know, we’re ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas.”
The comment led to intense backlash from country music fans. They got boycotted and blacklisted. Following this, the singer said in a statement, as reported by CBS News, “As a concerned American citizen, I apologize to President Bush because my remark was disrespectful,” and added, “I feel that whoever holds that office should be treated with the utmost respect.”
But a few years later, she told TIME in May 2006, “I don’t feel that way anymore. I don’t feel he is owed any respect whatsoever.” The band gradually rebuilt its audience over time and continued to stay vocal about political issues in the years that followed.
