Rockstar and liberal icon Bruce Springsteen stole the show in a star-spangled lineup at the penultimate episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Springsteen attacked Trump and Paramount’s top brass, Trump loyalists Larry and David Ellison, who were instrumental in cancelling the beloved show. This came after the duo took over CBS’s parent company.
Bruce Springsteen addresses “small-minded people” and clocks Trump and Ellison on Stephen’s final show
The timing of the show cancellation raised some red flags. It not only followed David Ellison’s takeover of Paramount but also came shortly after Colbert had openly mocked Paramount. The latter called Paramount out for paying $16 million in settlement with the Trump administration, reportedly to smooth over a corporate merger that required Donald Trump’s approval.
Springsteen said, “I’m here in support for Stephen, because you are the first guy in America who lost his show because we got a president who can’t take a joke.” He also criticized staunch Trump supporters Larry and David Ellison. The singer continued, “And because Larry and David Ellison feel that they need to kiss his ass to get what they want.” Springsteen added, “Stephen, these are small-minded people. They got no idea what the freedoms of this beautiful country are supposed to be about.”
After these comments, Springsteen launched into a spirited rendition of his protest song, “Streets of Minneapolis.” The song directly criticizes Trump’s ICE crackdown in Minneapolis. It makes references to the late Alex Pretti, who was killed during protests.
“Trump’s federal thugs beat up on his face and his chest, then we heard the gunshots and Alex Pretti lay in the snow dead,” he sang. “Their claim was self-defense, sir, just don’t believe your eyes. It’s our blood and bones and these whistles and phones against Miller and Noem’s dirty lies.”
Meanwhile, President Trump appeared elated by the cancellation news, saying, “I absolutely loved that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings.” He added, “I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Has even less talent than Colbert!”
Trump had also earlier called Springsteen a “bad, and very boring singer,” suggesting that MAGA should “boycott his overpriced concerts”.
