During a two-day visit to Reggio Emilia, Italy, Kate focused on one of her signature causes: early childhood development. The trip marked her first major international engagement since stepping back from public duties during treatment, and the reception was hard to miss.
Thousands gathered in Piazza Prampolini to catch a glimpse of the Princess of Wales, while local educators praised her interest in the region’s child-centered learning philosophy. Kate even put her gap-year Italian skills to use, charming residents and teachers along the way.
But the visit carried significance beyond school programs and photo opportunities.
The royal family has undergone major changes in recent years, including Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s departure from royal duties and the fallout surrounding Prince Andrew. As a result, a smaller group of senior royals is carrying a heavier workload.
“William and Catherine carry the whole thing,” author Catherine Mayer told People, noting that many senior working royals are stretched thin.
Several royal commentators echoed that sentiment, arguing that Kate’s popularity remains one of the monarchy’s greatest assets. Her ability to attract crowds and media attention has long made her one of the institution’s most recognizable figures.
“Charles is the incumbent, but she and William are the future,” Mayer said. “There is no institution without them.”
The timing is notable. King Charles recently earned praise for a successful visit to the United States, while Kate’s return to overseas engagements has helped reinforce a sense of stability after a turbulent period for the royal family.
