Idris Elba Talks DJing With King Charles at Buckingham Palace

Actor Idris Elba recently spoke about a royal outing. He opened up about a Buckingham Palace DJ gig with King Charles.

He joined the King on Thursday, May 14 as part of The King’s Trust’s 50th anniversary. Charles founded the organization to assist disadvantaged youth in attaining jobs and acquiring the necessary skills for various jobs.

Idris discussed his feelings on Monday, May 18 during the Los Angeles premiere of his movie Masters of the Universe. He described his DJ experience with the King as “amazing.”

In a People interview, he said, “It was the 50th year of The King’s Trust, who I work with sometimes. One of our programs, Elba Hope and The King’s Trust, we had this DJ that I trained. He’d done one of my courses, and he was DJing. King Charles came over and he wanted to do a back-to-back, so he got on.”

Idris credits The King’s Trust for helping him with his career aspirations. He received a grant from the trust when he was 18.  With the money he received from the organization, he could attend the U.K.’s notable National Youth Music Theatre. He has served as its ambassador for several years.

King Charles recently called on Idris and his wife, Sabrina, to assist in the Creative Futures program. This initiative creates courses to build skills for youth in arts and film, TV and theater. More than 100 people have benefited from the Elba Hope Foundation’s Creative Futures.

The King recognized Idris’ philanthropic efforts when he announced in January that the actor would receive a knighthood.

The King’s DJ days continued a few days later at the Aviva Studios in Manchester, England. Here, Christian St. Louis instructed him on how to mix music using a turntable.

“I got genuine energy from him; he didn’t seem like he was being forced to be here,” Christian said in a People interview. “He seemed like he wanted to be here.” He added, “He is a lot more quiet, a lot more composed than I imagined. I got granddad vibes. He gives me that kind of energy.”
