The late Princess Diana, in a newly revealed personal letter, confided to her former classmate about intimate details of her wedding to the then-Prince Charles, whom she married when she was 20. The Princess of Wales wrote, “It’s wonderful being married—I think it’s safe to say that after two months…!”
An unearthed hand-written letter by Princess Diana shares details of her special time with Prince Charles
The letter, published by The Telegraph, was sent to Katherine Hanbury, a former classmate of the late Princess of Wales at West Heath Girls’ School in Kent.
Explaining the details of her honeymoon to her friend, Diana wrote, “We had a blissful honeymoon with endless sun and luckily calm seas… we are now up in Scotland until the end of October, which is a big treat for us – I adore being outside all day & hate London!” She then admitted, “Its [sic] wonderful being married – I think it’s safe to say that after two months…” She further explained how she was adapting to her new life and role within the Royal family, writing, “Its [sic] a case of playing with grown-ups!”
The couple got married on July 29, 1981. Following their wedding, they moved into Apartments 8 and 9 at Kensington Palace, where Diana turned the third floor into a nursery for her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.
Married in a grand ceremony at St. Paul’s Cathedral, the couple’s marriage was short-lived. They officially got separated on August 28, 1996. As per the BBC, Diana accepted divorce only after pressure from Queen Elizabeth II and told a friend it was the saddest day of her life.
The unearthed letter, dated Sept 27, 1981, is among a collection of items to be auctioned by the Princess’s school friend Hanbury at Gorringe’s Fine Art & Interiors sale in Lewes, East Sussex, in July. The sale aligns with what would have been the 45th anniversary of the couple’s wedding.
