Princess Diana and John F. Kennedy Jr. once shared a private meeting that sounds like the setup for a Hollywood romance. In reality, the encounter was all business. Though it left behind a fascinating royal-pop culture “what if” that is still making headlines decades later.
According to a new book, the late JFK Jr. personally approached Diana in 1995 with an unusual proposal. He wanted the Princess of Wales to appear on the cover of his political lifestyle magazine, George, which had launched earlier that year and was still finding its footing in the crowded media landscape.

In her new book “The Kennedys and the Windsors,” author Caroline Hallemann details the private meeting between the two icons at New York City’s Carlyle Hotel, according to a report from the Daily Mail.
Kennedy reportedly arrived with several creative concepts for a potential cover shoot. One idea imagined Diana wearing a Revolutionary War-style hat. Another placed her inside a limousine, attempting to avoid photographers.
The pitch, however, never got off the ground. According to Hallemann, Diana had already decided she wasn’t ready to appear on the magazine’s cover. She reportedly felt that George needed to prove itself before she would publicly attach her name to the publication.
Rather than shutting Kennedy down outright, Diana is said to have politely declined and joked that she might reconsider for the magazine’s 50th or even 100th issue. Back at the George offices, Kennedy reportedly admitted defeat but couldn’t help commenting on the royal’s charm.
The meeting itself wasn’t entirely surprising. Diana reportedly admired the way JFK Jr. handled life under constant public scrutiny and even hoped her eldest son, Prince William, would develop a similar sense of confidence and poise.
Former royal aide Patrick Jephson later claimed Diana once remarked that she wanted William to navigate fame as successfully as Kennedy had.
