Walton Goggins’ Former Mother-In-Law Speaks About Family Tragedy

The White Lotus and Fallout star Walton Goggins first wife, Leanne Knight, died by suicide in 2004. Goggins has since spoken openly about her death and how it left him emotionally paralysed. However, in an exclusive interview, Knight’s mother, Peggy Kaun, has disputed his account, saying, “His story of looking for peace for himself is as fake as anything.”

In a recent conversation with RadarOnline, Peggy Kaun stated that her family had remained silent about Knight’s death for more than two decades, but felt compelled to respond because she found Goggins’ interview deeply disturbing, believing it was intended to gain sympathy for himself.

Goggins told GQ in 2025, as reported by Marie Claire, “It’s a very complicated story. Ultimately, it was revealed that she’d made the decision. And yeah, I thought it was really unrecoverable for me. Life on the other side of that.”

Leanne Knight and Goggins got married in 2001. It was the same time when Goggins rose to prominence through his character Shane Vendrell on the FX series The Shield. In 2004, Knight went missing and was eventually found dead. She was 37 at the time of her death, as per SCMP.

Kaun has now alleged that her daughter, who struggled with anxiety, was abused by the actor. “Walt browbeat her, beat her down in verbal confrontations. Their home in Los Angeles was like a bachelor pad. Walt wouldn’t allow Leanne to express any of herself in the decor. It was like Leanne disappeared into Walt’s world.” Adding, “He revealed to Leanne he had been married before – something he never told her about, and that’s when things went south.”

According to the mother, Knight was devastated after discovering Goggins was previously married and was having an affair. The couple then took marriage counselling, where Knight mentioned she had no access to their finances and had to request money from her husband to cover her living expenses. Kaun said the sessions ended after two months, with the therapist advising her daughter to leave the marriage.

“After Leanne’s death, Walt sent us a three-page, rambling letter trying to explain away his shoddy treatment of Leanne, which I found pathetic, and we haven’t been in contact since,” said the mother, who further stated, “I don’t think he grieved. He paid no divorce settlement and started seeing [Nadia Conners, his second wife] just months after Leanne’s death. His story of looking for peace for himself is as fake as anything.”
