Cardi B has weighed in after Donald Trump made a historic appearance at the NBA Finals. The rapper performed at halftime during Game 3 between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden. However, she later claimed the president’s presence changed the energy inside the arena.
The Grammy winner didn’t blame Trump for the Knicks’ loss outright, but she made it clear she felt something was off throughout the night.
Cardi B implies the vibe at MSG was off due to Donald Trump’s presence in the building
The June 8 matchup was already a major event for New York basketball fans. It marked the Knicks’ first NBA Finals game at Madison Square Garden since 1999, and excitement was running high throughout the city.
Notably, the president became the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game, triggering heightened security measures around the arena. Streets near Madison Square Garden were reportedly shut down, and fans faced lengthy delays entering the venue.
Cardi, who headlined the halftime entertainment, later reflected on the experience during an Instagram Live session.
“It felt kinda dark,” she told followers while eating a SpongeBob SquarePants ice cream bar. “You know how it felt? It felt like the principal was there and everybody had to be on their best behavior.”
When a fan suggested Trump’s attendance may have brought bad luck to the Knicks, Cardi responded, “It probably was.”
Despite her criticism, the “WAP” rapper acknowledged that the increased security came with the territory of hosting a sitting president. She even joked about finally seeing Secret Service agents up close after they rerouted traffic around her vehicle.
On the court, the night ended in disappointment for New York. The Spurs defeated the Knicks 115-111, silencing what had been an electric crowd for much of the evening.
Cardi, however, isn’t giving up on her hometown team. After performing “Bodak Yellow” and “Bodega Baddie” alongside the Knicks City Dancers, she took in the game courtside with her son Wave. Following the loss, she expressed confidence that New York could bounce back and even floated the idea of hosting an Instagram prayer circle ahead of Game 4.
