NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Donald Trump Attending Knicks Finals Game

NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani watched the Knicks game in the finals, which President Donald Trump also attended. Their attendance set up the possibility of an awkward encounter between two opposing men, but Mamdani clarified that they wouldn’t meet.

The Knicks returned to New York holding a 2-0 lead over the San Antonio Spurs, placing the franchise within reach of its first championship in decades. The occasion drew several celebrities and public figures, turning a basketball game into a moment of genuine civic electricity. For Mamdani and Trump, however, the evening was experienced from decidedly separate vantage points.

Speaking ahead of the matchup, Zohran Mamdani addressed the prospect of sharing an arena with Donald Trump. “I will be at Game 3. I will be in a very different section of the stadium,” the NYC mayor said. He framed the Finals run as having given New York the feel of “the world’s greatest small town,” a fleeting sense of collective identity that has cut across the city’s usual divisions (via HITC).

The relationship between the two politicians carries a peculiar recent history. Their Oval Office meeting earlier this year produced what observers described as awkward moments of mutual support. Trump and Mamdani came from opposing political traditions, locating narrow areas of agreement on matters affecting New York.

Moreover, the build-up around Madison Square Garden became a spectacle in its own right. Resale ticket listings placed the cheapest available seats between roughly $8,800 and $10,000, while premium options were reported at figures as high as $200,000. Spike Lee, Ben Stiller, and Timothée Chalamet were among the familiar Knicks faces who filled the lower bowl. Trump’s attendance also triggered additional security planning, which received backlash.

For Zohran Mamdani and Donald Trump, Game 3 possibly represented the one event where they could publicly want the same outcome. Notably, the Spurs won the Monday evening game, but the Knicks still lead 2-1.
