Taylor Swift gave fans an unexpected treat at the Toy Story 5 world premiere on Tuesday. After the movie wrapped, the pop superstar stepped onstage, sat down at the piano, and performed “I Knew It, I Knew You,” her new song from the film’s soundtrack.
Before playing, Swift got emotional about joining the beloved franchise. She told the crowd that being part of the Toy Story universe meant a lot to her and even called Toy Story 5 her favorite entry in the series. Gushing over the film, she described it as “insanely beautiful” and also called it a “masterpiece (via Variety).”
Swift also shared a special moment with longtime Toy Story composer Randy Newman, teaming up with him for a performance of the iconic “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.” While she skipped the red carpet, she later joined the cast for a big group photo at the Dolby Theatre.
Her appearance came just days after releasing “I Knew It, I Knew You,” which she wrote with Jack Antonoff for Jessie, the cowgirl toy voiced by Joan Cusack. In a heartfelt social media post featuring a childhood home video, Swift said writing music for Jessie felt both nostalgic and exciting. She also thanked director Andrew Stanton and gave a shoutout to Newman for shaping the franchise’s unforgettable sound over the years.
Released in 1995, Toy Story launched Pixar’s flagship franchise. Before the upcoming fifth film, the series included four main movies and several spin-offs. Tom Hanks voices Woody; Tim Allen plays Buzz Lightyear; and Joan Cusack returns as Jessie.
In Toy Story 5, Woody and Buzz reunite to help Bonnie after a new Lilypad smart tablet threatens to take over kids’ lives. Familiar characters including Forky, Slinky Dog, Hamm and Trixie also return for the adventure.
