8647’ Anti-Trump Message Allegedly Etched in National Mall Lawn During Reflecting Pool Renovation

US federal authorities are investigating the mysterious code ‘8647‘ that was found marked in the grass on the National Mall in Washington on June 11. This comes just days before a large number of visitors are expected in the area for the UFC Freedom 250 event, which coincides with Donald Trump’s birthday, who will turn 80 on June 14.

Unexplained lawn markings near the reflecting pool draw attention in Washington, D.C.

According to People, U.S. Park Police responded to the scene at approximately 11:30 a.m. on June 11. National Guard members also arrived at the West Lawn site, and investigators have since collected grass samples for testing to determine the cause of the discoloration.

Aerial photos from Reuters show the number sequence. The ‘8’ was the most clearly visible, formed from discolored circles in the grass, followed by a ‘6.’ The ‘4’ was harder to distinguish, and the ‘7’ was also heavily discolored. It remains unclear how the numbers were made or when the markings first appeared. However, they weren’t present in Getty Images photos from June 5.

The police stated, “The cause of the discoloration has not yet been determined. Grass samples have been collected for testing. The investigation is ongoing.” An Interior Department spokesperson, who oversees national parks including the National Mall, called the markings “deranged vandalism.” The statement added that any threat against the President is taken seriously, and that U.S. Park Police will investigate and hold those responsible accountable.

The number ‘8647’ has previously been used by protesters against Trump. The number ’86’ is a hospitality term meaning to get rid of something, while ’47’ refers to Trump as the 47th president.

The code caught attention in May 2025 when former FBI Director James Comey was charged after posting an Instagram photo of seashells arranged to form the same numbers. Comey deleted the post and stated he found the shells while walking on a beach and “didn’t realize some folks associate those numbers with violence.”
