Donald Trump shared his bold take on what could happen if democratic socialist Janeese Lewis George wins the DC mayoral election. He stated that he would take back the state and run it on a federal basis. Furthermore, Lewis George provides a befitting response, claiming that the president’s dislike of how residents vote is a threat to democracy itself.
Donald Trump raises the prospect of federal control as Janeese Lewis George leads DC mayoral race
After his conversation at the Oval Office, a reporter asked about his thoughts on Lewis George potentially winning the DC mayoral elections. She was further compared to a fellow democratic socialist and New York’s mayor, Zohran Mamdani, in front of the president. Trump clearly stated that he wouldn’t like it if George Lewis triumphed in the mayoral primary.
Threatening to get back the city, he said, “Maybe we take back Washington and run it on a federal basis,” he said. “We won’t put up with it. We’re not going to lose our businesses.” He further reaffirmed, “By the way, Washington now is a safe, beautiful place” (via Newsweek). These comments come after two Democratic primary polls were revealed, and they showed Lewis George to be leading the pack. Moreover, the prediction market also strongly hints at her chance to win.
During an interview with The Final 5 with Jim Lokay, Lewis George addressed the threats given by Trump, claiming that they won’t fear Trump and obey in advance. “We’re not going to get ICE off our streets by fearing this president,” Lewis George said.
“And we’re not going to protect our rights or home rule by obeying in advance. Threatening home rule because you do not like how residents vote is an attack on democracy itself,” she said. She boldly stated that it’s the people who elect the mayor they want, and they aim for someone who could stand up to Trump.
