Mitch McConnell’s office shares health update
Kentucky Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell was hospitalized on Sunday morning, his office has confirmed. The nature of the health issue and the cause of the hospitalization have not been disclosed yet. However, his spokesperson has recently shared an official statement, providing an update on his health.
“Senator McConnell was admitted to the hospital this morning. He is receiving excellent care,” McConnell spokesperson David Popp said.
Earlier this year, McConnell was admitted to the hospital for eight days. In a statement in February, his spokesperson announced, “In an abundance of caution, after experiencing flu-like symptoms over the weekend, Senator McConnell checked himself into a local hospital for evaluation last night.”
“His prognosis is positive and he is grateful for the excellent care he is receiving,” the spokesperson said at the time. “He is in regular contact with his staff and looks forward to returning to Senate business.”
McConnell experienced a series of other health scares in the past. In October 2025, the 83-year-old Kentucky Republican fell during a visit to Capitol Hill. McConnell was walking down a hallway when he was approached by a woman with a question regarding U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity. Moments later, he took a stumble and fell to the ground before his associates helped him get back on his feet.
Last year, McConnell announced that he would not run for re-election. He said that following the end of his term, he will leave the chamber “with great hope for the endurance of the Senate as an institution. There are any number of reasons for pessimism, but the strength of the Senate is not one of them.”
According to reports, Republican Rep. Andy Barr, endorsed by Trump, will face Democratic former state lawmaker Charles Booker in November’s election to succeed McConnell.
