Gavin Newsom says Donald Trump has tasked Department of Justice with investigating his family

California Governor Gavin Newsom accused President Donald Trump of directing the Department of Justice to investigate him and his wife. Newsom stated on X that Trump targeted them because “I am considering running for President.” He added that federal authorities “have not found a crime” and “are simply trying to find one.”

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sacramento is reportedly investigating Newsom and his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom. The probe largely focuses on her tax filings and dates back to early 2025. The DOJ’s public integrity section had examined potential tax fraud and evasion by Siebel Newsom. Investigators have also looked into evidence suggesting personal use of nonprofit funds, CNBC reported.

Newsom released a video statement addressing the investigation directly. “After calling for my arrest last year, Donald Trump directed his Department of Justice to investigate me,” he said. He also declared that “Donald Trump picked the wrong target” and that “we have nothing to hide.”

Federal agents recently “knocked on the doors of family friends and former employees,” Newsom revealed. He also learned the probe had reached his home and targeted his wife. Newsom described Siebel Newsom as “a public servant” and “a woman who has dedicated her life to supporting women and girls.”

Newsom compared his situation to that of other Trump critics targeted by the DOJ. He named former FBI Director James Comey, former Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, and New York Attorney General Letitia James. He also referenced Senator Adam Schiff and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as similar targets.

The statement arrived a month after his former chief of staff Dana Williamson pleaded guilty to federal fraud charges. Newsom’s office maintained those charges related to conduct before Williamson worked for him. The White House referred questions to the DOJ, which did not immediately comment.
