Kanye West’s July 4 Concert Faces Cancellation Push From Local Mayor

The mayor of San Antonio is pushing for the cancellation of Kanye West’s July 4 concert at the Alamodome. The push for the cancellation has come after several of the rapper’s shows were canceled in Europe. However, he has performed in Mexico City and Los Angeles, as well as cities in Turkey, the Netherlands, and Georgia.

Kanye West announced the concert in San Antonio, Texas, last week. The tickets, ranging in price from $127.50 to $1,461.25, are currently on sale on Ticketmaster. The premium prices are for the “YE – Front Row Experience” row-one seats in the stadium’s lower level that are closest to the stage.

On June 20, San Antonio mayor Gina Ortiz took to social media to express her disapproval of West’s concert. She wrote, “I support canceling the @kanyewest concert. Military City USA should not host someone with a record of hate speech and antisemitic comments in a city-funded facility like our Alamodome—not ever, and certainly not on July 4th, our Nation’s 250th birthday. Standing up to antisemitism is exactly what it takes to achieve a more perfect Union.”

The Alamodome can hold more than 70,000 fans. The concert is part of West’s tour supporting his new album, Bully. His past anti-semitic remarks have drawn intense backlash over the years. In April, the British government banned the rapper from entering the country to perform, citing his history of inflammatory comments and antisemitism. In the same month, Polish officials and a Swiss soccer club also canceled his June concerts. Last month, Italian officials canceled his concert scheduled for July, citing security concerns raised by Jewish leaders.

Earlier this month, Republican Senator Rick Scott of Florida also called for the cancellation of West’s concert in Raymond James Stadium, Tampa. In his X post, he wrote, “Kanye West has praised Hitler and slandered Jews. Letting him perform in a publicly funded venue in Tampa would effectively give him, and everything he’s done, the Florida taxpayers’ seal of approval. We can’t let that happen.”
