Oprah Winfrey Exposes A-List Singer Who Fell off Stage During Show

Oprah Winfrey revealed a surprising behind-the-scenes story about Whitney Houston while accepting the Cannes’ LionHeart Award in France. The media mogul recalled a private incident from Houston’s final appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” explaining why it remained hidden from the public for years.

The revelation came during a wide-ranging conversation about legacy, philanthropy, and some of the most memorable moments from Oprah’s career. While reflecting on her friendship with Houston, Oprah shared that the singer had relapsed before a performance and suffered a fall on stage in front of a live audience.

Oprah says Whitney Houston fell off stage during a performance on The Oprah Winfrey Show after relapsing

Speaking at the Lumière Theatre during the Cannes Lions festival, Oprah looked back on the trust she developed with Houston over the years. She recalled their famous interview, which began with a private conversation before filming started.

“We did the whole ‘Hey girl, how you doing?’ greeting thing, and then I stopped the cameras, and I went behind stage, and I said, ‘So tell me, what do you want to happen here? And I’m gonna tell you what I want to happen here,” Oprah said as per Variety. “And that was one of the most powerful interviews.”

However, Oprah said Houston’s final appearance on her show unfolded under much different circumstances.

“I had such trust from The Oprah Show audience … I think it was [Houston’s] last show with us, and she had gone back on drugs,” Oprah recalled. “The first interview I did with her when we’d gone behind stage, and I asked her about her intention. She was clean, but the day she came to my show then to perform in front of the audience, she was not, and she fell off of the stage.”

According to Oprah, audience members had cameras with them that day, creating the possibility that photos of the incident could spread publicly. Fearing the consequences for Houston, she made a direct appeal to those in attendance.

“I knew that if that story got out … she would be destroyed by that,” Oprah said. “And so even though the audience was there and the audience had cameras, I begged them not to put those pictures out because it would ruin her life, and they did not. That would not happen today, I can tell you that.”

Houston died in February 2012 at age 48 following an accidental drowning.
