Buckingham Palace Cancels Changing of the Guard for This Reason

Buckingham Palace has temporarily paused one of its most famous royal traditions. The decision came as a heatwave swept across the United Kingdom, bringing unusually high temperatures and raising safety concerns for soldiers, horses, and visitors.

The iconic Changing of the Guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle was canceled for several days this week. While the spectacle is a must-see attraction for tourists visiting London, royal officials said the extreme weather left little room for compromise.

Buckingham Palace canceled the Changing of the Guard ceremony because of extreme U.K. heat affecting safety

The official website of the Household Division announced that ceremonial guard changes would not take place from Tuesday through Friday due to soaring temperatures. The division, which oversees the seven British Army Regiments responsible for the ceremonies, said the move was made with public safety in mind.

“We take the well-being of our soldiers and military working horses very seriously,” the Household Division said in the statement.

The statement added that officials were working alongside the Met Office and other government agencies to reduce outdoor activities during the heatwave. Temperatures were expected to climb above 90 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas.

“To support this effort, and reduce risks to military personnel and horses as well as, importantly, to the public, who usually gather in large numbers to watch these events, this week will see some changes,” the Household Division said, according to PEOPLE.

While the full ceremony was canceled, some duties continued in a modified form. The Household Division noted that the King’s Life Guard would still change shifts without ceremony to “avoid heat stress to horses,” as per PEOPLE. Soldiers on duty were also moved into shaded areas and rotated more frequently.

The Changing of the Guard remains one of the most recognizable traditions associated with Buckingham Palace. According to the Household Division, the event represents the formal handover of responsibilities between the Old Guard and the New Guard and typically lasts around 45 minutes.

Although cancellations are rare, they are not unprecedented. The ceremony was suspended following the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing and was also halted for nearly 18 months during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For now, officials say protecting people and animals remains the priority, even if it means disappointing visitors hoping to witness a piece of royal history.
