A new royal book is putting Sarah Ferguson’s years at Royal Lodge back under the spotlight. One claim, in particular, has sparked fresh debate over how the Duchess of York allegedly lived during her time at the Windsor estate.
The allegation comes from royal biographer Andrew Lownie’s upcoming book “Entitled,” which paints a picture of life behind the gates of Royal Lodge through accounts from former staff. One of its most talked-about claims centers on a daily cream cake that was reportedly prepared whether anyone ate it or not.
Andrew Lownie’s Entitled implies Sarah Ferguson’s reported cream cake routine reflected a culture of extravagance at Royal Lodge
According to “Entitled,” cited by RadarOnline, kitchen staff at Royal Lodge were allegedly instructed to bake a fresh cream cake every day for Sarah Ferguson. If it went untouched, it was reportedly thrown away and replaced with another the following day.
Lownie quoted filmmaker Dominic Morgan, who spoke with a former staff member. “Every day, the chef was ordered to make a sizeable cream cake,” the employee allegedly said. “If it wasn’t eaten, it was thrown away, and a fresh one baked the next day, regardless,” as per “Entitled.”
The book claims the routine became symbolic of a household where appearances often outweighed practicality. One former insider reportedly said, “To many members of staff, the cake became a symbol of a culture where appearances and routine mattered more than practicality. Whether it was eaten or not was almost irrelevant – the expectation was that it would be there every single day,” according to RadarOnline.
The same source reportedly added that some employees later viewed the practice as “completely wasteful and pointless,” especially during a period when many households were becoming more conscious of food waste.
The cream cake claim was only one of several allegations included in Entitled. Lownie also alleged that personal trainers remained on standby despite rarely being needed, while another employee was reportedly assigned solely to organize Ferguson’s medication. The author further claimed the Duchess of York purchased copies of her own books to give away as gifts.
The book revisits a period before Ferguson and her former husband, Ex-Prince Andrew, faced years of public controversy. Although the couple divorced in 1996, they continued living together at Royal Lodge for years.
RadarOnline also noted that Andrew’s legal troubles and the couple’s changing public standing have fueled ongoing speculation about their living arrangements. Neither Ferguson nor representatives for Royal Lodge publicly responded to the claims in “Entitled.”
