Savannah Guthrie reportedly chose work over stepping away during one of the hardest weeks of her life. The Today show anchor allegedly returned to the NBC desk despite executives encouraging her to take time off as heartbreaking developments emerged in her mother Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.
The reported decision came after news surfaced that a ransom note allegedly claimed Nancy had died shortly after her February disappearance. While Savannah continued anchoring Today, she also addressed the investigation on-air and made an emotional plea for information.
Savannah Guthrie’s decision to stay on-air surprised Today Show co-workers
According to Rob Shuter’s Naughty But Nice Substack, NBC executives privately urged Savannah to take as much leave as she needed. An insider claimed the network “practically begged her to take a break.”
“Nobody expected her back. Everyone assumed she would step away—and honestly, no one would have blamed her,” the source told Naughty But Nice.
Instead, Savannah reportedly returned to work. Behind the scenes, producers and colleagues allegedly tried to shield her from discussing the painful case on television.
“Everyone was in protection mode,” an insider told Naughty But Nice. “The goal was simple: let Savannah do her job without forcing her to relive the worst experience of her life in front of millions of people.”
That reportedly changed when Savannah decided to address the story herself. “She said, ‘If this is going to be discussed, I’m going to be the one discussing it,’” a source claimed to Naughty But Nice. “She wasn’t going to let anyone else tell her family’s story.”
The emotional moment unfolded during Tuesday’s Today broadcast. Fighting back tears, Savannah acknowledged she was speaking not as a journalist covering the story but as a daughter living it. “I wanted to take the opportunity to ask people to, to beg people to come forward, somebody knows something,” she said on Today, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
She continued, “We are in agony. And we cannot be at peace… We need your help. We’re begging for your help.”
Investigators have not announced any new leads in the case. Reports this week revealed that a second ransom note, allegedly sent shortly after Nancy Guthrie disappeared, claimed she had died after being abducted. Savannah and her family have continued asking the public to share any information that could help locate her mother.
