Why Kelsea Ballerini Says You Should ‘Prepare for the Worst’ in Love

Kelsea Ballerini is turning one hard life lesson into direct money advice for relationships. The country singer said financial independence still matters, even inside the “happiest, healthiest relationship.” Her comments came during SoFi’s “Richer Lives” podcast, where she discussed money, work, divorce, and privacy. Ballerini said couples should talk clearly before buying a home, opening joint accounts, or combining finances. Her main message was simple: protect yourself before life changes.

Kelsea Ballerini shares her advice on relationships and how crucial it is to be financially independent

Kelsea Ballerini said on SoFi’s “Richer Lives” podcast that she was “very wary” about discussing divorce again. Still, she framed her answer in terms of money advice for women. The singer said that before buying property or opening a joint account, couples need “financial transparency.” She added that this also applies before “getting married” and joining everything. Ballerini said partners should know where money is coming from. She also said they should understand “how you’re blending it.”

Meanwhile, the “Patterns” singer said the advice matters more now because many women earn heavily. Ballerini said there are “a lot of women breadwinners now.” That, she explained, made honesty even more important. She said couples should know “where it’s going” and how to protect money “as a unit.” Ballerini said people “never want to prepare for the worst.” However, she added that it was still important to “prepare for the worst for yourself.”

Still, Ballerini made clear the advice was not about distrust. She compared it to practical planning and said, “We buy car insurance.” The singer added, “You just truly never know where life’s going to bring you.” Her biggest advice was to remain “financially independent on your own.” That should happen “to the best of your ability,” she said. She also tied privacy back to music. Ballerini added that her music had not gone too far. Instead, she admitted that she has taken talking about her music too far. Her real life, she said, belongs in the songs now.

For context, Ballerini married country singer Morgan Evans in 2017, and they finalized their divorce in 2022. After the split, both artists released music that referenced the breakup, while Ballerini became more guarded about discussing her private life. She later dated “Outer Banks” actor Chase Stokes on and off from 2023 to early 2026.
