Mayor Zohran Mamdani on whether he’d change constitution to run for President

NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani recently sat down for an interview with ABC News’ This Week. During the interview, journalist Jonathan Karl reminded him that he would turn 35 in a few months, which is the age that meets the US Constitution’s requirement to run for the presidency. Mamdani let out a small laugh when Karl mentioned his age.

The interview then pointed out another prerequisite: the candidate must be a natural-born US citizen. He then asked Mamdani, who was born un Uganda, if the constituency should be changed, seemingly to accommodate candidates who were not born in the United States.

In response, the mayor said, “No. I think the Constitution looks good the way it is. I’m very excited to focus on New York City.” He then joked, “But thank you for reminding me of my upcoming mortality.”

Zohran Kwame Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Party and the Democratic Socialists of America, is the 112th mayor of New York City, serving the city since January 2026. He previously represented the 36th district, Astoria, Queens, in the New York State Assembly from 2021 to 2025.

Born on October 18, 1991, in Kampala, Uganda, Mamdani is the son of Mahmood Mamdani and Mira Nair. His family moved to the United States when he was seven. He was naturalized as a citizen at age 27 in 2018.

In 2019, Mamdani announced his campaign for the New York State Assembly’s 36th District, which includes Astoria. He defeated incumbent Aravella Simotas in the primary and won the 2020 general election. He served in the Assembly until 2025, when he was elected Mayor of New York City. At age 34, he became New York City’s youngest mayor since 1892.
