Serena Williams’ Wimbledon return took a painful turn. Now, her doubles hopes are in question. The tennis legend came back to singles action at Wimbledon after nearly four years away, but the night ended with a right knee concern. The update has kept Serena Williams and Wimbledon 2026 firmly in the spotlight.
The tennis legend injured her right knee during her Wimbledon singles match.
According to AP, Serena Williams tweaked her right knee during her first-round match against Australian player Maya Joint on Tuesday, June 30. Williams, 44, did not request on-court medical treatment, but the issue later affected her post-match duties.
Her agent, Jill Smoller, confirmed the injury after Williams skipped her media session. “Serena tweaked her right knee at the end of the first set,” Smoller said, adding that Wimbledon and WTA medical teams excused her from media obligations. Williams lost the match 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3 after pushing Joint to a deciding set on Centre Court. Reuters reported that the 23-time Grand Slam champion still relished the reception, saying, “It was really great to be back at Wimbledon.”
The loss marked Williams’ first Wimbledon singles match since 2022. She received wild cards for both singles and doubles, setting up a possible reunion with her sister, Venus Williams later this week. That doubles return now carries some uncertainty. Reuters reported that Serena and Venus are scheduled to face Solana Sierra and Camila Osorio in the opening round. Smoller said Williams left the site unaided and is doing everything she can to get ready.
The comeback also became a family moment. AP reported that Williams’ daughters, Olympia and Adira, watched from the players’ box as their mother returned to the grass. For fans, the injury scare added another layer to an already emotional comeback. Serena may have exited singles early, but her Wimbledon story might not be finished yet.
