As per CNN, the first gathering is set for 6 p.m. Thursday and is being described as a rehearsal. It is expected to draw about 100 guests. A larger party is planned for Friday, when a cocktail event would begin in the late afternoon and continue until about 4 a.m. Saturday. Roughly 1,000 guests are expected for that portion.
The timing lines up with earlier clues. Guests were told in invitations that the celebration would be in New York City on July 3, a source familiar with the cards shared with CNN. City officials also said a permit request would allow street closures around Madison Square Garden from Thursday through Saturday. The event company behind the request is known for planning weddings.
The celebration also comes just before Fourth of July weekend, which marks the nation’s 250th birthday, as New York sees heavy tourist traffic for the World Cup and travelers moving through Penn Station for matches at MetLife Stadium.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani appeared to nod to the reports at a Tuesday news conference before a heat wave. “If you happen to be getting married at MSG, you will be staying inside and staying cool,” he said, calling that “a good example to set for the city at large.”
Madison Square Garden may seem like an odd wedding site, but it offers tight security and room for large private events. The arena lists a capacity of 19,500 for such functions. Swift has played there eight times, and the building has hosted weddings before, including Sly Stone’s 1974 marriage to actress Kathy Silva and a 1980 mass ceremony for 4,000 Korean Unification Church parishioners. Swift also drew attention there recently when she attended Game 4 of the Knicks’ playoff run in a Stevie Knicks T-shirt.
