Yankovic backed out of an AI advertisement despite a huge paycheck after calling it weird. The musician later said he did not want to become “the poster boy” for AI.
Weird Al says he chose not to endorse AI despite receiving a substantial financial offer
Yankovic, 66, in an interview with Syracuse.com, mentioned receiving a commercial offer that came with a huge paycheck. However, he declined the project after discovering it involved AI, saying he was uncomfortable endorsing it. He said, “I’m not going to mention any names, but they told me it was for a business. It was business software that would increase productivity.”
Initially, the five-time Grammy winner agreed to the commercial because it came with what he described as “a nice pile of money.” According to Deadline, he mentioned, “And then a week before we’re supposed to shoot it, I find out, oh, this is, it’s AI. And I thought, ‘Oh no, I can’t be the poster boy for AI, forget it.’ So I felt bad about kind of pulling out at the last minute. But yeah, I’m not, I’m not down with that.”
Yankovic is not the only Hollywood figure to publicly criticize the growing use of AI. According to Variety, Madonna recently said in an interview, “Algorithms and artificial intelligence are the opposite of taking risks, and to me that is the opposite of making art.” British actress Emma Thompson has also expressed frustration with the growing influence of AI in the entertainment industry.
This comes amid the ongoing debate over artificial intelligence in Hollywood. The SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) has recently endorsed Trump’s AI policy framework.
As artificial intelligence continues to divide opinions in Hollywood, Yankovic joins a growing list of celebrities choosing to distance themselves from AI-related projects.
