Dwayne Johnson Says Carrying Maui’s Hook Was No Easy Task

Dwayne Johnson may be The Rock, but even he had something to say about Maui’s famous fishhook. The actor recently opened up about bringing the demigod to life in Disney’s live action Moana. As it turns out, carrying Maui’s oversized hook came with an unexpected physical challenge.

The megastar reveals how heavy Maui’s hook was in live-action Moana

Dwayne Johnson is reprising his role as Maui in Disney’s live action Moana, but this time, the role involves much more than voice acting. The actor stepped into the full look of the beloved demigod, complete with the wig, tattoos, costume, and, of course, Maui’s iconic fishhook.

Disney’s live-action Moana trailer gave fans a closer look at Johnson’s Maui ahead of the remake. The film stars Catherine Laga’aia as Moana, while Johnson returns as the shapeshifting demigod he first voiced in the animated movie.

However, the live action adaptation made one part of the role unexpectedly demanding. In an exclusive interview with People, Johnson joked that Maui’s hook “was so f—ing heavy.” He also laughed about people assuming he could easily handle it because of his larger-than-life action star image. The actor admitted that the prop turned out to be a genuine challenge while filming.

Johnson’s transformation into Maui has already drawn plenty of attention. Earlier promotional footage showcased him fully dressed as the beloved Disney character, complete with Maui’s signature hairstyle and body art. The revelation about the fishhook adds another interesting behind-the-scenes detail to the production.

Johnson has remained closely connected to Moana since the original animated film, where Maui’s confidence, humor, and “You’re Welcome” performance made him one of Disney’s most recognizable modern characters. Now, the live action adaptation gives him the opportunity to portray the character on screen in a new way.

For fans, Maui’s fishhook may appear effortless to wield on screen. Behind the scenes, however, Johnson revealed it was far heavier than many might expect.
