Laverne Cox Reflects on Naomi Campbell Snub During Her First Met Gala

Laverne Cox looked back on an unforgettable moment from her first Met Gala that had nothing to do with her red carpet look. The actress revealed Naomi Campbell once turned down a photo opportunity with her, but she remembered the encounter with humor rather than resentment.

The moment happened during Cox’s Met Gala debut in 2019, where she wore Christian Siriano. Years later, she said the brief interaction remained one of her favorite fashion memories and insisted there had never been any bad blood between her and the legendary supermodel.

Laverne Cox recalled how Naomi Campbell declined a photo at the Met Gala but insists there was never any bad blood

According to Page Six, Cox shared the story during an upcoming episode of Bronwyn Newport’s Walk-In Substack series. She recalled posing for photos with Bella Hadid when photographers spotted Campbell walking by.

“Naomi! Take a picture with Laverne and Bella!” photographers shouted, according to Page Six.

Cox said Campbell stopped, looked her up and down, and then kept walking without joining the photo. Instead of taking offense, the “Transcendent: A Memoir” author said she found the moment unforgettable.

“It was the greatest honor in the world. The fact that I got to see that live? She was like… ‘Hmmm, No.’ And walked away,” Cox recalled, according to Page Six.

According to Page Six, Cox initially hesitated to tell the story before joking, “She knows she did it!” She quickly clarified there was no lingering tension between them.

“Naomi and I are cool,” Cox said, according to Page Six. “I’ve met Naomi many times. She’s always sweet to me. [At] that moment, she just wasn’t feeling it!”

She even praised Campbell’s reaction, calling it unforgettable.

“But that look [she gave me] – was so iconic. Like, to be shaded by Naomi Campbell?” Cox added, according to Page Six.

According to the publication, Cox has since become a major fashion fixture after making her Met Gala debut in Christian Siriano. She is also known for collecting Thierry Mugler designs, a passion she discusses in Newport’s fashion-focused series.

The Walk-In series takes viewers inside the closets and personal style of fashion insiders. According to Page Six, future guests include Betsey Johnson, Symone, and Christian Siriano.
