Jimmy Kimmel has turned a health update from Senator Mitch McConnell into a joke. The late-night host interrupted his summer break to post an edited version of a hospital photo the Kentucky Republican had released just hours earlier.
Jimmy Kimmel mocks Mitch McConnell’s hospital photo
Kimmel shared the edited photo on Instagram on Sunday, replacing McConnell’s face with his own smiling face. Elaine Chao, the senator’s wife, remained beside him in the altered hospital room photo. The caption read, “For those who’ve been asking, I’m feeling great.”
The comedian appeared to direct the post at two things at once. It poked fun at the senator’s effort to address weeks of speculation about his health while also referencing Kimmel’s own break from television. Guest hosts, including Tiffany Haddish and Rosie O’Donnell, have been filling in for him throughout the summer.
Mitch McConnell’s team had released the genuine photo from the hospital to calm mounting public concern, especially after Lindsey Graham’s death. The 84-year-old fell at his Washington, D.C., residence and was briefly unconscious before being admitted to the hospital. In a public statement, McConnell shared details about his condition. “My doctors have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages,” McConnell said. He also confirmed that he had been dealing with “a mild case of pneumonia” during his recovery.
McConnell also acknowledged that doctors have not yet cleared him to return to the Senate. However, he said he continues to carry out his responsibilities while recovering. “But rest assured that, in the meantime, I’m not taking a break from the Senate business that matters to you. I’ve been working closely with my legislative staff on current issues, and with my Kentucky team who help me provide timely constituent services across our Commonwealth (via CNBC).”
Meanwhile, Kimmel is expected to return to his late-night show in September. Until then, his Instagram activity suggests he is continuing to comment on political figures while away from television.
