Warner Bros. pulled back the curtain on Tom Cruise‘s next role. The studio’s newly released trailer shows a completely different look for Cruise as an aging oil tycoon.
His look is described as buried under gray hair, prosthetics and a padded hair section. The 64-year-old star headlines Alejandro González Iñárritu‘s upcoming dark comedy, “Digger,” which is set for an October 2 theatrical release.
The footage gives audiences their most awaited and detailed look, which had been deliberately kept hidden until now.
Tom Cruise’s dramatic transformation stuns fans in first Digger trailer
The Tom Cruise transformation centers on his role as Digger Rockwell, posing as a billionaire businessman who is trying to prove that he can fix an ecological disaster which his own company caused.
The trailer shows Cruise in heavy padding and thick Southern drawl. It is quite different from his action-hero image he built across the “Mission: Impossible” and “Top Gun” franchises.
The Digger movie is Cruise’s first film outside a major franchise since 2017’s “American Made” and his first project since 2025’s “Mission: Impossible- The Final Reckoning,”. It is one of the highest-grossing films of his career.
It also follows his Honorary Academy Award, which he received last year. At a recent CinemaCon appearance in April, Cruise said working on the role took 40 years to reach. He described the character as one of the biggest challenges of his career.
The Digger trailer also introduces a lineup that includes John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed, Michael Stuhlbarg, Sophie Wilde and Emma D’Arcy.
According to its official logline, Cruise’s character is on a frantic mission to convince the public that he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he unleashed destroys everything.
Iñárritu has described the project as a “comedy of catastrophic proportions.” At Warner’s event, Inarritu sent a video from London. He explained to the crowd how the project once began just after he finished directing “ The Revenant”, for which he won an Oscar.
Cruise said that the film is unlike anything that he has worked on.
