President Donald Trump sparked fresh headlines after revisiting his rivalry with former Vice President Kamala Harris during a new television interview. The president discussed the possibility of moderating a future presidential debate and reflected on his 2024 debate experience. His comments quickly brought Harris back into the political conversation. The exchange also revived discussion about their tense campaign and a private phone call Harris later described in her memoir.
Donald Trump comments on Kamala Harris and says he’s open to moderating a 2028 presidential debate
On July 13, Trump appeared on the Salem News Channel with Hugh Hewitt. When asked whether he would ever moderate one or more presidential debates, he replied, “I would love to do it.” He also criticized the moderators of the 2024 ABC News presidential debate, David Muir and Linsey Davis. Trump claimed the debate felt “two and a half against one.” When Hewitt asked, “Who’s the half?,” Trump responded, “Kamala is the half.”
Trump did not mention Harris by name during that exchange, but his remark referred to his former election opponent. PEOPLE said it reached out to Harris’ spokesperson for comment. Harris lost the 2024 presidential election to Trump, but she has not ruled out another White House campaign. During a February interview with podcaster Sharon McMahon, Harris said, “I haven’t decided,” before adding, “I might,” when asked about a possible 2028 run.
The renewed attention also brought focus back to Harris’ memoir, 107 Days, published in September 2025. In the book, Harris wrote about a private phone call with Trump after authorities arrested a man in September 2024 for allegedly plotting to assassinate him at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida. She wrote that she expected “Mr. Hyde” but instead heard “Dr. Jekyll” when Trump answered. According to Harris, Trump complimented her work, said it was “harder to criticize her publicly,” added that he would “tone it down,” and shared that his daughter, Ivanka Trump, was “a big fan.”
Harris wrote that the private conversation did not change her opinion of Trump. She described him as “a con man” who knew how to persuade people despite showing kindness during the call. Trump’s latest comments have once again renewed attention on their political rivalry and prompted fresh discussion about a possible 2028 presidential contest.
