Sir David Beckham looked devastated after England’s World Cup dream ended in Atlanta. His son, Cruz Beckham, stepped in with a comforting hug.
David Beckham received a heartfelt hug from Cruz after England suffered a horrible loss
According to Page Six, Cruz leaned toward his father and wrapped an arm around him after Argentina defeated England 2-1 in the FIFA World Cup semifinal. The outlet added that the 21-year-old wore his father’s No. 7 England shirt while Beckham watched the final moments in a dark suit.
The father-and-son exchange came after a dramatic turnaround at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The Guardian reported that Anthony Gordon put England ahead in the 55th minute before Enzo Fernández equalized late in the second half. The same report said Lautaro Martínez headed home Lionel Messi’s cross in stoppage time to send Argentina into the final.
Beckham watched the match with Victoria Beckham, Romeo Beckham, Cruz, and Harper Beckham. The family erupted when Gordon scored, but their celebration quickly gave way to disappointment as Argentina completed its comeback.
Cruz’s hug captured the mood around the former England captain. Beckham’s history with Argentina stretches back to the red card he received during England’s 1998 tournament exit.
After the match, Beckham shared his disappointment in an Instagram post featuring England’s players standing together before their supporters. “Heartbreak for us all but memories that inspire and last forever,” he wrote. He also thanked the team, fans and country for what they had given throughout the tournament.
The Beckhams followed England during the competition. Cruz previously joined his father at the group-stage match against Ghana, while the family later celebrated England’s quarterfinal victory over Norway. Victoria’s understated reaction to that win also became a viral moment, prompting David to joke that she had been “celebrating inside.”
England came within minutes of reaching its first men’s World Cup final since 1966. Instead, Argentina’s late comeback ended the run and left Beckham, his family and England supporters processing another painful exit.
Although England’s campaign ended in disappointment, Cruz’s gesture stood out as a quiet moment of support for his father after the final whistle.
