President Donald Trump reportedly plans to use a prime-time address to revisit election security and foreign interference. Reports suggest the president may focus on China, voting machines, and intelligence gathered during his first administration.
What reports say Donald Trump plans to address in his prime-time speech
CBS News reported that Trump plans to present claims about Chinese meddling in U.S. elections. The network cited sources familiar with the address but did not identify them.
Reuters reported that the White House had considered releasing classified intelligence about China’s ability or intent to disrupt the 2020 election. However, sources told the outlet that the material did not show Beijing changed votes or manipulated election results.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt disputed accounts of the speech. “As usual, anonymous sources are speculating about what President Trump will say,” she told Reuters, adding that nobody knew what he would include. Trump gave reporters a preview on Tuesday. When asked whether he would discuss voting machine integrity, he said the speech “will concern that subject,” without offering details.
The Donald Trump China election speech could also cover newly declassified intelligence and what administration officials describe as weaknesses in U.S. voting systems. Reuters reported that Trump may use the address to support election-law changes before the November midterms.
The available intelligence does not establish that China altered the 2020 result. A 2021 assessment from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence found no indication that any foreign actor tried to change voter registrations, ballots, vote counts, or reported results. It said China considered influence operations but chose not to deploy them.
The expected address has drawn criticism. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez urged television networks not to air unsupported election claims, while Trump’s intelligence nominee recently faced questions about whether Joe Biden won in 2020.
Trump has repeatedly challenged elections he lost. He recently walked out of an interview after a reporter pressed him to provide evidence for claims about a “rigged” vote.
For now, the China allegation rests on anonymous-source reporting. The speech will determine whether Trump presents new evidence, repeats previous claims, or announces policy changes.
