Democratic Congresswoman Calls Out Pete Hegseth’s ‘Homoerotic’ Politics

Pete Hegseth‘s new military policy has triggered fierce political backlash. Rep. Becca Balint accused the defense secretary of promoting a contradictory message. A Pentagon plan to expand testosterone screening for U.S. troops has quickly become a flashpoint in Washington. Hegseth says the initiative is about military readiness. However, Balint sees it very differently.

The controversy began after Hegseth announced mandatory testosterone deficiency screenings for active-duty and reserve service members aged 30 and older. Younger troops will be able to request testing voluntarily. The Pentagon said the program is intended to improve “Warfighter readiness.” Hegseth argued it would help keep military personnel “strong, resilient and capable” and performing at their “absolute best” (via Advocate).

However, Balint didn’t hold back when responding to the initiative and its imagery. For those unversed, Balint is Vermont’s first openly LGBTQ+ member of Congress. During an interview with MeidasTouch correspondent Scott MacFarlane, she argued it reflected what she called “intense, homoerotic feelings towards men” among certain Donald Trump administration figures. She stressed that homoeroticism itself was not her criticism, saying the real issue was the hypocrisy she saw behind that messaging. “The weird part is that they pretend that that’s not what it’s about,” Balint explained.

She expanded on that argument by calling Hegseth the “manly, manly, rugged macho man” before comparing him to the exaggerated masculine figures created by Finnish artist Touko Laaksonen, better known as Tom of Finland. Balint ultimately said the defense secretary had become “the embodiment of that,” a reference to the artist’s influential depictions of hypermasculine men.

The rollout is also turning more heads because it follows the Trump administration’s moves to bar many transgender service members and tighten access to gender-affirming care in the military. That timing has only added to the debate. The Pentagon has yet to explain how much the program will cost, whether the same standards will apply to women, or what testosterone level would qualify someone for treatment.
