Ed Harris expected a central role when he signed on for “Dutton Ranch.” The four-time Oscar nominee says Season 1 left him frustrated enough to consider leaving.
Ed Harris says the part he accepted differed significantly from what he expected before production began
Ed Harris said he felt “misled” about the size of his “Dutton Ranch” role after entering production with another understanding of veterinarian Everett McKinney. Speaking to Variety at the July 20 premiere of “The Dink,” Harris said producers described him as one of four main characters before he signed his contract. Once filming began, the material did not match those conversations.
“Midway through the first season, I said, ‘Get me the f—k out of here,’” Harris said in a video Variety shared on X. He added that he told the production he felt “underused and inconsequential.”
Everett appeared in Season 1 and became connected to Beth Dutton, Rip Wheeler and Beulah Jackson. However, Harris said filming made his character feel less important than expected.
One deleted scene deepened his frustration. Harris filmed a bar sequence in which Everett walked to a microphone and sang after Rip called him forward. The production removed the song because it reportedly felt too upbeat for the episode’s dark ending.
Harris said that decision made him consider voiding his contract. Still, his reaction softened after he watched the season. He called it “pretty good” and acknowledged that Everett seemed “relatively important” to the story.
“Dutton Ranch” has already secured a second season, and Harris remains under contract. He said filming will begin in February, with producers promising Everett a more substantial role. Kelly Reilly reinforced that point in an interview with TV Insider, saying Season 2 would feel “very much more Ed’s show.” She also emphasized that the series follows four lead characters, not only Beth and Rip.
The production also faces a creative change after its showrunner’s exit. Harris did not name Taylor Sheridan or identify who outlined his role.
For now, Harris plans to return. Season 2 must deliver the substantial part he expected.
