Prince William has conveyed his profound “sadness” over the passing of Kevin Keegan on Monday, July 20.
In a post on Kensington Palace’s X (formerly Twitter) account, Prince William saluted the former England forward and manager, noting he inspired “generations with his talent, passion and love of the game”.
“Incredibly saddened to hear of the passing of Kevin Keegan. A truly remarkable footballer and manager who inspired generations with his talent, passion and love of the game. Above all, he will be remembered as a kind and generous man. Our thoughts are with his family and all who knew him,” the tribute read. The president of the Football Association signed the note with his initial, “W”.
The post drew an outpouring of tributes in no time. “Rest in peace Kevin, my hero,my idol xx,” wrote a fan. “Such sad news, RIP Kevin. Condolences to his family and friends,” echoed another. “My his beautiful soul rest in Eternal Power,” commented an admirer.
Additionally, a statement issued by Keegan’s family read: “It is with immense sadness that we announce that Kevin Keegan has passed away at the age of 75. Kevin had been battling cancer and was surrounded by his wife and daughters in his final moments. A double Ballon d’Or winner, Kevin was a much-loved husband, father and grandfather. The family would like to thank Kevin’s incredible medical team for all their support. This is a hugely difficult time and they are requesting space and privacy.”
Kevin Keegan captained England in the late 1970s and went on to become one of the most recognizable faces in British football. As a player, he won the European Cup with Liverpool in 1977 and later managed both Newcastle United and the England national team.
