Ben Affleck and his family are mourning the loss of his mother, Chris Anne Affleck, who died at 83. The former teacher and activist played a defining role in the lives and careers of Ben and his younger brother, Casey Affleck.

The Affleck family announced Chris’ death through an obituary published in The Boston Globe. She died peacefully in her sleep on June 2 after a pancreatic cancer diagnosis in December 2025. Chris had hoped to see Casey’s son Atticus graduate from high school. She attended the ceremony with her family on May 31 and died two days later.
Born Christopher Anne Boldt in New York City in 1942, Chris graduated from Harvard and spent 35 years teaching in public schools. She retired in 2008, but education formed only one part of her public-service legacy.
Chris taught literacy classes in Mississippi during Freedom Summer in 1964 and protested the Vietnam War. In later years, she volunteered during Barack Obama’s presidential campaign and supported other community and human rights causes.
She also encouraged both sons as they pursued acting. Ben previously explained that one of his mother’s friends worked as a casting director, which helped him find opportunities as a child. Casey once described her as “really supportive” of their early careers.
One of Chris Affleck’s best-known public appearances came at the 1998 Academy Awards. She accompanied Ben while Matt Damon brought his mother. Ben and Damon won Best Original Screenplay for “Good Will Hunting” and celebrated the victory beside them.
Ben Affleck has three children: Violet, Seraphina (formerly Fin), and Samuel. Casey Affleck has two children: Indiana and Atticus. Her obituary described the grandchildren as the “animating force” of her final two decades and said she valued their willingness to question authority.
Representatives for Ben and Casey had not issued separate public statements when reports of her death emerged. The family’s obituary remembered Chris through her teaching, activism and commitment to those closest to her.
