Melania Trump has no plans to attend Donald Trump’s White House speech
Melania Trump will not be present at the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Friday. The first lady is among several key MAGA figures who are reportedly skipping the event.
The original dinner in April took place at the Washington Hilton. It was disrupted after an armed suspect stormed the event, firing gunshots inside the venue. Law enforcement identified the gunman as Cole Tomas Allen, who was intercepted before he could enter the main room.
Besides First Lady Melania, Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio will also not attend Friday’s dinner. A White House spokesperson has since confirmed that they will not be present due to prior commitments (via Fox News).
The White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner was rescheduled to July 24. This time, the event will be held at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington, D.C. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt spoke with reporters on Thursday. She said, “Alongside all of you members of the media, the president looks forward to finishing what he started before a despicable assassination attempt derailed the original event back in April.”
Shortly after the new date was announced, Weijia Jiang, the president of the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA), said the dinner would be a “more intimate gathering.”
He added, “This dinner will not only be an opportunity to carry out our program. It will be a statement that violence has no place in American life and a free press will not be intimidated into silence. As you have all demonstrated, courage and community can and should rise above.”
Additionally, Sean Curran, the Secret Service director, has confirmed that tight security measures are in place for the event.
