Emma Roberts celebrated her wedding day surrounded by famous friends and family, but one important relative wasn’t there. Her father, Eric Roberts, has now addressed his absence after skipping the actress’ Idaho ceremony with Cody John.
The veteran actor insists he supports his daughter’s decision. He also says his love for her has never changed.
Eric Roberts addressed missing his daughter Emma’s wedding
In a statement to Page Six, Eric responded to questions about why he missed the intimate ceremony in Sun Valley, Idaho.
“I love my daughter, always have, always will,” the actor said. “It is perfectly wonderful for her to celebrate however she wants, with whomever she wants.”
The wedding took place at John’s family estate after the couple dated for four years. Emma exchanged vows during a 45-minute outdoor ceremony despite temperatures reaching 95 degrees.
The American Horror Story star wore a custom, vintage-inspired Monique Lhuillier gown. Her 5-year-old son, Rhodes, walked her down the aisle before she met John on a wooden platform.
Several Hollywood stars attended the celebration. Ashley Benson, Brandon Davis, Demi Moore, Kristen Stewart, Dylan Meyer, Sarah Paulson, Billie Lourd, and Emma’s aunt, Julia Roberts, all watched the couple say “I do.” Julia sat in the second row beside her husband, Danny Moder.
While guests gathered in Idaho, photographers spotted Eric leaving a Crunch Gym in Los Angeles the following day, according to the publication.
The absence naturally reignited years of speculation about Eric and Emma’s relationship. Earlier this year, however, the Oscar nominee rejected claims that they remain estranged.
Speaking on the Really Famous With Kara Mayer Robinson podcast in April, Eric said their relationship is “only complicated through outside eyes … because they don’t get any of it.”
He also reflected honestly on Emma’s childhood. Although he praised her success, he admitted he fell short as a parent.
“I was a wash rag. I was not to be depended on emotionally whatsoever,” Eric said. He added that he takes “full responsibility” for that period of his life.
Eric welcomed Emma with former partner Kelly Cunningham in 1991. Despite their complicated history, his latest comments suggest he respects his daughter’s choices, even if they meant celebrating one of life’s biggest milestones without him in attendance.
